Like Casey has explained, there comes a time in life when an animal must fight. Well, what if they do fight and the defeated comes out alive...with his leg torn off?
Doesn't the rules say that his days are limited then?
Yes, if they were loners. But in a pack, they would help their fallen comrad heal. What I mean by numbered days is, if an animal does not seek aid for his or her pack/herd/family in a matter of days, than he or she will surely die from disease and stress.
The Jugular or Windpipe
(as told by Casey)
Even a small puncture wound can be deadly if it hits your jugular or windpipe. For animals, who can't bind their wounds to prevent bleeding, if your jugular is punctured, you're as good as dead. Its part of the superior vena cava and it returns blood to the heart. Very quickly, your body will shut down, with little blood reaching your brain, and just as little reaching your heart. Don't worry, though. You'll faint from blood loss before it really hurts, or anything. ^_^
The Back
(as told by Casey)
Running along the left side of the spine is the Dorsal Aorta. Serious ramifications can result from this being punctured. For starters, this branches off to the arteries that give blood to your liver. I forget how long you can live without your liver, but its something along the lines of five minutes. Must I tell you what that means? If its punctured in a place after its branched off for the liver, this is also feeding both kidneys, the intestines, and the hind legs (or just the legs, in a human's case). THIS IS BAD. If the Dorsal Aorta is punctured, you will either die, or be rendered inable to use your legs until it has recovered. Oh, and did I mention blood loss? Aortas carry a heck of a lot of blood, as they provide blood to large portions of the body.
Torn Limbs
So, let us say that our favorite wolf, Cujo rips off his brothers right back leg. Well, knowing Cujo, he'll leave his brother for dead. But, let's say Cujo has an ounce of sanity and kindness. While Strider must lay in a den to let it heal, he can have some of his packmates watch over him while he heals.
(as told by Casey)
Please keep in mind blood loss. While the injury will be a big deal, you can't have them walking around after a few days because they'd be exhausted from their loss of blood! It takes a while to rebuild lost blood cells, so just because their injury is healing nicely, doesn't mean they can do whatever they want.
Ripped Under-Bellys
Once again, this is another horrible injury. An animals intestines will fall out, become infected, and the animal can die in a matter of days. However, proper care from fellow herd and pack mates can enable one to get over this. But, beware, with predators around, you can't protect your hurt deer for long.
(as told by Casey)
If your belly is ripped enough that your intestines actually come out, then you've got a major problem. For humans, that can be sewn together. For animals, the gap may be too wide. Personally, if one of my characters is hurt that badly, s/he may survive the night, but no more than a week. If there is some explanation for why your stomach fused itself closed again, then your animal may be able to lead a semi-normal life.
Torn Muscles
Shadow, for now, is injured in the Dragon Kingdom and I have accepted his vulnerability. When an animal's muscles become torn or pulled, they grow weak and tense. This means the animal can not move too far without his or her muscles locking up. Over time, with proper watch, care, and avoidance of predatory positions, one can heal from this.
Poison and illness
I will decide whether or not your animal survives from the poison, considering his or her size, strength, and pelt color. Why Color? In the animal world, lighter coats tend to show weaker immune system. When scientists traveled to africa, they discovered a pride with three male lions. Two were dark golden colors, while the other was a white ivory color. They noticed the white lion suffering from illness and began to test and watch. A mild illness was injected into a light colored lion in their test lab and a dark colored lion. The dark colored lion pulled through within hours, but the lighter lion seemed to have more complications. So, we have concluded, depending on size and color of the coat, we can determine who is best fit to fight off both illness and poison.
Gun Shots
You can as well heal from this, but disease is more fatal. A limb could fall off, you could get gangrein(sp?), or you could loose feeling in the place you were shot. If you are shot in the back, you'll most likely die. If you are shot in the head...you'll most likely die.
(as told by Casey)
People have been known to shoot themselves in the head and not die. The bullet ricocheted off their skulls, rather than killing them. It doesn't happen often, but it is possible to be shot with a gun in your head and live. Most veins and things are beneath the skull, so you're spared my rant about blood loss. ^_^
Head Shots
If you're hit hard enough in the head you can either suffer a concusion or death. That is all I have to say for this. Unless you're shot in the head, you get to choose to pull through or not...
